Course Selection

Over the summer, students choose their courses for the next year. Unlike in first and second year, students entering third year are responsible for most of their own course enrollment for the upcoming academic year.

Students participating in an international exchange in third year will choose their courses for the term they will be at Queen’s. Students who are not participating in an exchange will choose their courses for both terms. For those going on exchange, the Centre for International Management assists with course selection at the partner school. The process for course selection varies at different partners.

Most students in third year take 15.0 units per term. This typically includes COMM 306 (Business for Good: An Introduction to Impact-Driven Leadership) and COMM 341 (Operations Management), the required courses in third year, and a combination of Commerce and non-Commerce electives. For students interested in becoming a Chartered Professional Accountant, there is a specific list of courses to take. Students who want guidance in course selection, or who have questions about degree requirements, can make an appointment with an Academic Advisor through the Commerce Portal. Academic Advisors offer phone or Zoom appointments throughout the summer.

Students will be able to see their Shopping Cart and Enrolment Appointment times in the SOLUS Student Centre in early July.

The Shopping Cart is a tool within SOLUS that allows students to select courses they are interested in taking. Students can load courses into their Shopping Cart to prepare for the selection process during their Enrolment Appointment. The Shopping Cart does not guarantee a space in the course; however, it makes the selection process quicker and simpler for the student.

The Enrolment Appointment is the date/time when students can formally enroll in the courses they want to take for the upcoming year. Students are limited to choosing 15.0 units (five courses) during their Enrolment Appointment. During Open Enrolment, which begins late July, they are able to add an additional 3.0 unit course, for a total of 18.0 units (six courses), if they wish.

During Enrolment Appointments, many courses are restricted to students in a specific faculty. During Open Enrolment, students can select any course they would like to take, provided there is space in the course and they have the correct prerequisite(s).

Students may be frustrated if they are unable to add the courses they want during their Enrolment Appointment. Students may have the option to join a waiting list if a course they are interested in is full. Keep in mind that there is a lot of movement in and out of courses during the add/drop period at the beginning of both the Fall and Winter terms, and that there will be another opportunity to take the course in fourth year.

Please be aware that if students have an outstanding debt, they will NOT be able to participate in the course selection period. Students can log on to SOLUS to view their account and see if they have any outstanding debts. Please contact the Registrar’s Office will any fee-related questions, fees@queensu.ca.
