Application Process

Step One

Preliminary Assessment

Application Advisors will work with you through every step of the application process. Begin your preliminary assessment by completing the online application form and attaching a scanned copy of resume and your transcripts (if available).

An Application Advisor will review and contact you (normally within 2-3 business days) and suggest helpful ways to strengthen your file. To speak with an Application Advisor, call toll-free 1.866.861.1615.

Step Two

Complete your Application File

Your Application Advisor will ensure your completed file includes:

  • Official transcripts from each post-secondary institution you have attended sent by the Registrar of the institution directly to Smith's Master of International Business program Admissions Committee.
  • An interview with a member of the admissions committee (completed by phone or in person).
  • Official test results from the GMAT or GRE, and a English proficiency exam (if either is applicable).
  • Two references, one of which must be academic. Referees will be provided a link by your Application Advisor
  • A cover letter outlining what skills you bring to the program including any international experience (e.g., work, study, volunteer, etc.)
  • Resumé
  • A video essay component. You will be asked three randomized questions which are designed to be answered without any advanced preparation and will allow the admissions committee to get to know you, your personality, interests and passions much better than we could in a written essay.

Step Three

What Happens Next?

Once we receive the completed online application and required supporting documentation, qualified admission files will proceed through a three-stage selection process:

  • Stage 1: Review of all submitted documents.
  • Stage 2: Interview (in person or by phone) with the Director.
  • Stage 3: Final evaluation by the Admissions Committee on a wide range of criteria, including the candidate’s overall academic capability, work experience, ability to contribute to the team-based learning experience and leadership potential.

Application Advice

Each component of your admission file is weighted equally. If you fall a little short of the stated admission requirement for one component, but are strong on the others, your file will still be considered for admission. However, please note that simply meeting the minimum requirements is not a guarantee for admission.

Once you submit the online portion of your online application, we will contact you by email to advise you on what is needed to complete your application.

International Students

If you are neither a Canadian citizen nor a permanent resident of Canada, you must apply for a Study Permit from the Canadian government to enter Canada to enroll in this program. Depending on your country of citizenship you may also be required to have a Temporary Resident Visa to enter Canada. You should begin the application process as soon as you receive your offer of admission from Smith.

To determine your student visa requirements and to apply for a student visa go to Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Important: Acceptance into Smith's Master of International Business does not guarantee nor imply acceptance of your application for a study permit. You should not take any final steps, such as moving to Canada, purchasing plane tickets, or quitting your job, until your Study Permit is approved.

Please note that all international students are required to register for the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) for the time you are registered and studying at Queen's.

Given that delays sometimes occur in obtaining the required immigration documents (study permit, visas), you are strongly encouraged to apply as early as possible for the option(s) that interest you.
