Admissions
We are seeking exceptionally self-motivated people with a high level of creativity and the ability to execute. The following must be demonstrated in your application documents; a willingness to take calculated risks, involvement in interesting new projects, and a strong work ethic.
Above all else, the admissions committee is looking for you to demonstrate:
- Great communication skills – Both verbal and written. An instrumental necessity for entrepreneurs and innovators is the ability to clearly articulate their ideas and persuade people in an engaging manner.
- Proven ability to execute – Successful entrepreneurial people are able to do more with fewer resources. They are great problem solvers who drive momentum for their projects. They get things done.
- Passion for change – Entrepreneurs and innovators don’t sit still. They seek opportunity, push the needle and revolutionize the future.
The above skills will be reviewed in your statement of purpose, video essay, reference and/or interview.

Undergraduate Degree - Successful candidates will have an undergraduate degree in any discipline, from an accredited university with good academic standing.

Work Experience - The program welcomes applicants with any level of work experience from zero to several years. While prior full-time work experience is not required for the program, those interested in focusing on the corporate innovation stream should have a minimum of 2 years relevant work experience.

Language Requirements - Candidates whose native language is not English, and whose undergraduate university studies were taken in a language other than English must achieve a satisfactory score on one of the accepted tests of facility in English.

Demonstrated interest and involvement in innovation or entrepreneurship with activities and projects that stand out from your peers.
English Language Proficiency
Applicants whose native language is not English and whose undergraduate university studies were taken in a language other than English must achieve a satisfactory score on one of the accepted tests. The test of facility in English is a firm requirement and admission decisions cannot be made until an acceptable score has been reported.
Test results must be in the form of an official report sent directly by the testing centre to the Admissions Committee. Examinee’s score records, faxes or photocopies are not acceptable.
Recognized test of facility in English:
Each applicant is responsible for making arrangements to take any of these tests and for all costs that are incurred with the writing of any of the tests.
WES Assessment
All applicants whose undergraduate education was taken outside of North America will be asked to submit a WES (World Education Service) comprehensive course-by-course evaluation to ensure that their credentials are equivalent to a four-year bachelor’s degree in Canada. In addition to this, this evaluation will assist the admissions team in accurately assessing performance in specific subjects to ensure that the applicant has the quantitative ability necessary to be successful in the program. This evaluation will also be used to assess your candidacy for scholarship consideration. Please note that we will accept copies of the assessment; however, will also require original degree documentation sent directly from the University where the degree was conferred.
Application Process
There are three components to the application process. An evaluation will be provided at the end of each segment. There is no application fee.
International Students
We encourage you to apply as early as possible, to allow sufficient time to complete all elements of the application process for study visa processing.
International Deadline: Feb 28, 2024. We welcome your application to be considered for our August 2025 start.
Preliminary Assessment
- Complete the online application form and attach your Linkedin profile or a copy of your resume
- Once received, an Application Advisor will provide a link to complete a video essay on an online platform. This platform records your responses to questions around your experience, interest in the program, and what makes you an excellent candidate.
Application Advisors will work with you through every step of the application process.

Note: All applications will be reviewed following the submission of your preliminary assessment. Only successful candidates will move forward.
Complete Your Application File
Your completed application file will include:
- Statement of Purpose outlining why you would like to enter the program and why you think you would be an excellent candidate.
- One reference who is familiar with campus involvement, organization participation or professional experience. Referees will be provided a link by your Application Advisor.
- Official Transcripts from each post-secondary institution you have attended sent by the Registrar of the institution directly to Smith's MMIE Admissions Committee.
- English proficiency test results (if required).
- Applicants whose undergraduate education was taken outside of North America will need to submit a WES assessment.
Interview
An interview will be completed at some point during your application process based on the availability of both parties.
Once you have completed online application and submitted the required supporting documentation, you will proceed to an interview (in person, Zoom, or by telephone) with a member of the program’s leadership. When all of your application requirements have been received, your file will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee and a decision will be made regarding your admission.
