Certificate in Social Impact

Theory. Experience. Reflection.

The world needs responsible leaders who are passionate about creating change and ready to tackle complex social and environmental challenges. The Centre for Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Social Impact at Smith School of Business is proud to offer the Certificate in Social Impact, a certificate designed exclusively for Smith School of Business students.

The Certificate provides education, experiential learning opportunities, and structured reflection to support the development of the next generation of impact-driven leaders.

Program Objectives

The Certificate in Social Impact has been designed with the following objectives:

  1. Investigate the root causes that contribute to prevalent social and environmental challenges through the lens of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Environmental, Social, & Governance (ESG) concepts.
  2. Develop comprehensive entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial strategies that integrate inclusive, ethical, and sustainable practices into an organization.
  3. Apply critical thinking skills that encompass a more human- and community-centric approach to address complex social, environmental, and governance challenges.
  4. Evaluate organizational and systemic models through the lens of people, planet, and prosperity, with the purpose of cultivating regenerative business practices, a sustainable economy and interconnected society.
  5. Use non-traditional analytical tools that measure and report social and environmental impact in imagined or real organizations.
  6. Demonstrate that the planet and all people are part of the collaborative ecosystem of doing good business through active engagement and contribution to sustainability initiatives, community projects, or social impact efforts.

Program Components

The Certificate in Social Impact has the following three components:

  1. Academic component
    • Complete coursework and/or applied projects that integrate social impact themes, either through course selection or project design.
    • Engage with online modules created as part of the Council on Business & Society (CoBS)* Advanced International Certificate (Module 3), which focuses on applying responsible leadership and sustainability concepts to real-world challenges.
  2. Experiential Learning
    • Apply academic learning through experiential projects that involve working with organizations on real-world challenges.
  3. Final Assignment
    • The final Reflection Assignment is an exercise that brings together the theoretical components of social impact, your key learnings from the experiential endeavor, and any personal discoveries gained throughout the program.

“This program transformed my understanding of social impact practice. The foundations courses emphasized systems thinking and stakeholder alignment, reinforcing the importance of evidence and critical evaluation. The experiential component demonstrated that meaningful impact is built through infrastructure, capability transfer, and trust, not one-time interventions. I now question solutions that prioritize speed without sustainability and recognize that digital tools only create impact when paired with human relationships and institutional ownership. This experiential learning project reshaped how I approach leadership and social impact. I now view impact as something that must be intentionally designed, locally embedded, and continuously supported. Rather than delivering solutions to communities, effective social impact work creates the conditions for communities to lead their own development. This perspective will continue to guide my professional practice beyond this program.”

Astha Saini, AMBA'26

“I saw the Certificate in Social Impact as an opportunity to align my business education with my core principles. Throughout the program, it became clear that the themes of social impact should be a part of the underlying foundation for business strategy and operations rather than an add-on consideration. I highly recommend this certificate to anyone looking to evolve their business acumen into a tool for lasting community impact.”

Ben Zuo, FTMBA'26

“This program completely shifted how I view social impact. I now understand the importance of addressing systemic barriers, not just individual challenges, and I feel better equipped to approach social issues with a long-term, collaborative mindset.”

Sophie Sheehan, BCom'26

“Overall, my understanding of social impact has changed quite significantly during the program. I learned that there are multiple measures and ways to address social impact, along with various strategies that can be used. However, I found awareness to be just as important, as I did not realize how much of an impact an individual can have and how that impact grows over time, and even collectively as a group. It is important to understand the consequences of our decisions, even if the consequences may be unintended.”
