Smith School of Business - Postdoctoral Fellow in Accounting
Smith School of Business - Postdoctoral Fellow in Accounting
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in Accounting at Smith Business School of Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Accounting or a relevant discipline with the potential and interest in developing strong research record. Eligible postdoctoral fellow candidates must have the following eligibility requirements:
- Be within five years of receiving their PhD
- Be available to work full time, in-person at either Smith’s Kingston or Toronto location
- Have completed all requirements for their doctoral degree before starting
The Replication Research in Accounting Project (funded by the SSHRC and the Smith Chair of Accounting and Auditing) is looking to hire a postdoctoral fellow. The position is based at the Smith School of Business under the supervision of Professor Steven Salterio, Principal Investigator. The fellowship begins in the summer of 2025 (no later than 9/1/2025) and is appointed for one year, with potential (funding allowing) to renew assuming performance at or above expectations. The position is in person with a salary range of $90 - $100K.
The core of the work focuses on two questions about the nature of replication in social science research, using accounting as an exemplar. First is what are the determinants of original articles that are selected by researchers for replication? The second is: are the right papers being replicated, that is, those that have greater academic and practitioner impact? This research stream builds on a Contemporary Accounting Research editorial published in 2014 by Salterio that introduced issues around replication and invited a rethinking of their positioning as something to be hidden in a manuscript.
The research work uses data, behavioral and economic theory, and analytics to understand what drives authors to undertake a replication and are they replicating the “right” articles”. Planned projects include, for example, the analysis of (i) the determinants of selection of an Original Article for replication; (ii) a revisiting of the classic Brown 1996 paper on using citations to identify high long term impact accounting articles; and (iii) are the “right” articles being replicated (involving work on measuring practice impact of articles as well as academic impact).
The postdoctoral fellow is expected to produce academic research from the agenda and will work closely and directly with all members of the Initiative, including the PI, Co-PI, collaborators, and research based masters or PhD students. The fellow is expected to be actively involved in the Smith and broader Queen’s intellectual community by participating in meetings, research lunches/colloquia, and potentially joint projects. The fellow is also encouraged to integrate with the broader research community by attending seminars and other events.
The primary criterion for acceptance is research excellence and a clear interest in contributing to the research topic. The position requires someone with a strong background in the field, i.e. a PhD in Accounting that with strong focus on carrying out data management and analysis skills. The applicant will work 75% on the Replication Project and 25% on their own research. A modest allowance for travel and conferences will be provided.
