On November 28, 2009, Gaels' quarterback and Commerce student Danny Branagan led the team to a nail-biting win over the University of Calgary Dinos to capture the national university football championship. Thinking that was the end of his football career, Danny had accepted a job with PwC, which he was preparing for when he was invited to try out for the CFL.

After performing well at evaluation camp, Danny was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts. At the time, Danny was the only Canadian quarterback in the CFL.
