Smith students and alumni bring home medals from the Olympics

Kingston, Ont. – Five Smith students and alumni returned from the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games with medals for Canada.
Canada’s women’s ice hockey team, which included Blayre Turnbull, CIB’18; Laura Stacey, CIB’18; and Emerance Maschmeyer, CIB’17; defeated the United States 3-2 to win gold. Brad Gushue, AMBA’22, and Team Canada took home the bronze medal in men’s curling. In four-man bobsleigh, Ryan Sommer, CIB’19, and his teammates ended with a clean final run to claim bronze.
The five medalists were not the only Smith students and alumni to do Canada proud on the international stage:
- Mike Evelyn, CIB’19, placed 7th in the two-man bobsleigh
- Gilmore Junio, CIB’20, placed 21st in 500m speed skating
- John Morris, CIB’17, placed 5th in mixed doubles curling
- Jocelyn Peterman, CIB’20, placed 5th in women’s curling
- Mirela Rahneva, MMIE’21, placed 5th in women’s skeleton
- Cody Sorensen, AMBA'16, placed 29th in four-man bobsleigh
- Sara Villani, CIB’21, placed 12th in two-woman bobsleigh
- Lisa Weagle, CIB’18, placed 5th in women’s curling
