Workshop Facilitator

High Performance Teams - Workshop Facilitator

A Workshop Facilitator position is open at the Smith School of Business to facilitate the High Performance Teams Workshop in our Full-Time MBA (FTMBA) program. This workshop will require in-person facilitation that will occur in Kingston, Ontario, at an off-campus location affiliated with Smith School of Business, Queen's University.

The workshop is described as follows:

 Through this workshop, students will be introduced to and begin working with their program teams for the first time. Since approximately half of the evaluation for each course in the FTMBA program is based on team-related work, these teams must understand the core principles of high-performance teams, gain exposure to the steps required to develop high-performing teams, and establish their operating principles. The workshop should account for the fact that most students have had professional experience and so bring with them varying team experiences.

 Workshop Objectives:

  • Introduce both the theoretical and the practical foundations for the creation and ongoing operation of high-performance teams in an educational and business setting;
  • Allow for students to start to get to know their teammates, through a variety of team-building/break-out team exercises, discussions, etc.;
  • Align, where possible, any complementary Fit To Lead activities that are part of the opening session and those that are team-based (i.e. a further opportunity for students to get to know one another and work together);
  • De-brief and leverage the students’ results of the Big 5 Inventory, which they complete prior to joining the program. Specifically, introduce the Big Five personality model and provide an overview/brief history of the assessment and why we use it, and debrief the students' feedback report.
  • Provide resources and tools for students to leverage while they are becoming more comfortable with their structured team approach, e.g., articles, checklists, roles and responsibilities, skills inventory, feedback, and planning documents;
  • Discuss best practices, resources, and tools for students that specifically speak to the successful operation of a virtual team; and
  • Allow teams to create and submit (during the workshop, and shortly thereafter on their own time during an evening), a Team Charter, including mission, goals and norms. This document will be leveraged throughout the year by the teams as well as by their (Team) Coaches.
  • Content should build off of Team Best Practices identified in existing asynchronous content, as well as tie into Smith’s coaching model.
