By the Commerce Office
Recently, the Commerce Program implemented a new policy that allows students to designate a non-Commerce elective course for pass/fail grading that would normally have letter grading. These courses are called Personal Interest Credits, or PICs.
The goal is to encourage students to take courses in a wide variety of areas, and explore a subject without worrying about their GPA.
Students are still expected to complete the work for the course, but any passing letter grade is converted to a ‘P’ on the transcript. The course counts toward elective degree requirements, but not towards GPA.
After completing first year, students may designate a maximum of 3.0 units (one course) per term as a PIC, with a maximum of 6.0 units (two one-term courses) in their degree.
Each term, students have until the deadline to drop a course without academic penalty (early November in the Fall term and early March in the Winter term) to designate a course as a PIC.
If your student has questions about the PIC policy, encourage him or her to book an appointment with an Academic Advisor using the Commerce Portal.
