Sobey Scholarships celebrated

It looked like frosh week until guests peered more closely at the t-shirts worn by recipients of the D&R Sobey Atlantic Scholarships attending a dinner in honour of benefactors Donald (BCom’57) and son Rob (BA’88) Sobey in November. The familiar “I like Commerce” slogan had been replaced by “I like Sobeys” to show the Commerce students’ appreciation of the Sobeys’ generous support. Each t-shirt wearer was one of 20 recipients of the D&R Sobey Atlantic Scholarships currently studying at QSB. Another highlight of the dinner was the menu: fresh lobster provided by the Sobeys.

The scholarships are valued at $60,000 per student over four years. Students from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador applying to their first year of the Commerce program can be considered for the award.

“As 2008 marks the ten-year milestone of the creation of the scholarship, we are proud to continue supporting outstanding Atlantic Canadian students in their pursuit of higher education,” said Rob Sobey, President and CEO, Lawtons Drugs. “Following the completion of their studies, it is our hope that these students will eventually return to Atlantic Canada to pursue business opportunities and add to the economic and social prosperity of the region.”

The 2008 Sobey Scholarship recipients are:

  • Lindsay Fisher of Moncton, NB
  • Sang Yuan Xiong of Fredericton, NB
  • Matthew Alexander of Kippens, NL
  • Andrea Richardson of Dartmouth, NS
  • Georgina Neatby of Dartmouth, NS
  • Jenna Dicks of New Glasgow, NS

In addition to academic excellence, this year’s winners demonstrated strong skills in a number of areas, including athletics, music, theatre, student government and volunteering.

Sobey Scholars must achieve a 75 per cent academic average in their first year and 80 per cent averages in subsequent years on a full course load. The D&R Sobey Atlantic Scholarship Foundation has awarded more than $1.4 million since its inception.
