Professor Dan Monieson
Queen’s flags were at half mast in September as a mark of respect for Dan Monieson, Professor Emeritus of Marketing at the School of Business, who passed away peacefully on Sept. 20 in Kingston.
Dan joined QSB’s Marketing Department in 1961 and quickly became a powerful influence on the lives of his students and colleagues over the next three decades. Renowned as an outstanding teacher, he twice won the Commerce Society’s Teaching Excellence Award.
“For 30 years, Danny was an inspiring teacher, researcher and mentor—and a tireless goodwill ambassador for Queen’s School of Business,” says Dean David Saunders. “He will be missed.”
In November 2007, friends and former students traveled to Kingston from as far afield as B.C.’s Salt Spring Island and Florida to join in a tribute in honour of his 80th birthday. In a memory book presented to him that evening, Lan Friendly,BCom’83, QSB Advisory Board member, EVP and COO of General Mills, wrote, “[He was] a professor of immense talent, who cared passionately about his students and their minds. He made a real difference in many of our lives, and I suppose that is the greatest compliment that can be paid to any educator.”
In 1999, thanks to Dan’s leadership and a generous gift from another of his ‘star’ students, Mel Goodes, BCom’57, LLD’94, QSB established The Monieson Centre, a research-based centre designed to help organizations harness and enhance their knowledge “capital.”
It was in that Centre named for him that the QSB community gathered on September 23 to pay their final respects to a remarkable professor, colleague and friend. Dan is survived by his wife Lois and their two sons.
