Michael Farrant, BCom, was appointed Chief Financial Officer of Sage Gold. Sage Gold has just commenced production at its Clavos Gold Project in Timmins, ON.

Paul Lawrence

Paul Lawrence, BCom, assumed the role of vice-president and CFO for Commercial Metals Company last September. He joined the company in 2016 as vice-president of finance. After leaving the Toronto area, Paul lived in Brazil and Tampa, Fla. He’s now in Dallas with his wife and youngest child. Three other children are attending the University of Florida.

Frances McDonald, BCom, died on May 26 in Toronto at age 49 from cancer. After graduation, Frances began a career in human resources, working for Rogers, TD Canada Trust, Manulife, Ontario Lottery and Gaming and Canadian Tire. Frances had a passion for connecting with people, often paddleboarding from cottage to cottage to say hello to her friends on Mazinaw Lake in Eastern Ontario. Frances is survived by her husband, Jay Howard; children, Christopher, Andrew and Erin; and siblings Sarah and Heather.

Dan Pawliw, BCom, co-founded healthcare company Right Health in 2016, with the aim to improve healthcare access for Canadians. In September 2017, the company acquired Akira Medical, an on-demand mobile healthcare platform that provides instant access to healthcare practitioners via text and video chat.

Kristina Pearce with Annie and Sophia Pawliw
Kristina Pearce (BCom) recently launched a specialty search firm called workharmony, “an expert in flexible employment.” workharmony provides a platform for professionals who have opted out of the full-time workforce for various reasons, but are interested in customized, flexible career opportunities. Kristina and Dan Pawliw (BCom’92) are enjoying their busy family life with daughters Annie (8) and Sophia (5).

Kristina Rogers, BCom, is Consumer Products Global Leader for EY. Now based in Turkey, Kristina has been with the company since 2013. Previously, she was a Senior Partner at Monitor Group, where she co-led its Middle East management team.

Sean Silcoff, BCom’92, has had a film adapted from the award-winning book, Losing the Signal, about the spectacular rise and fall of Blackberry, which he wrote with fellow journalist Jacquie McNish. The film, which stars actors Jay Baruchel and Glenn Howerton as Research in Motion heads Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, explores the relationship between the two co-founders and the collapse of one of the world’s first smartphones. Sean is a reporter at The Globe and Mail.

Sean Silcoff, BCom, and co-author Jacquie McNish, won the National Business Book Award for their 2015 book, Losing the Signal: The Spectacular Rise and Fall of BlackBerry, that was featured in the Summer 2015 issue of QSB Magazine. The bestselling book, published in Canada by Harper Collins, was also shortlisted for the Financial Times & McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award last fall.

Valerie Swatkow
Valerie Swatkow (BCom) has repatriated to Canada after nearly 14 years out of the country. Now working and living in Toronto, she looks forward to reconnecting with old friends. She had an eventful 2009, she reports, having welcomed son Finnegan on April 16 and married the love of her life, Brian Kelly, on August 22.
