Valerie Swatkow
Valerie Swatkow (BCom) has repatriated to Canada after nearly 14 years out of the country. Now working and living in Toronto, she looks forward to reconnecting with old friends. She had an eventful 2009, she reports, having welcomed son Finnegan on April 16 and married the love of her life, Brian Kelly, on August 22.

Valerie Swatkow (BCom) left her job at Leo Burnett Chicago last July and is now in California as the Director of Business Management at NYCA, an advertising agency in Encinitas. “Living two blocks from the beach in Southern California is definitely a perk of the new assignment!” she says. “I'm also engaged and expecting a baby boy on April 10.”

Steven Troll, MBA, relocated to Philadelphia to help manage a new long-term revenue opportunity for one of the largest cable companies in the U.S. As part of this engagement, he has also joined Calanda IT — a local boutique-consulting firm. Beyond fulfilling his day-to-day commitment to clients, Steve is tasked with expanding the firm’s consulting practice from the ground up.

Thomas Whelan, BCom, joined Coeur Mining in January as the Chicago-based company’s senior vice-president and chief financial officer. Coeur owns and operates five mines across North America. Before joining Coeur, Thomas was the CFO at Vancouver’s Arizona Mining, which was bought by Australia’s South32 for US$1.8 billion in August 2018.

Tom Whelan, BCom, is now Chief Financial Officer with Arizona Mining. A chartered accountant, he’s spent 20 years working with some of Canada’s largest mining companies. Before joining Arizona, he was CFO at Nevsun Resources.

Trevor Van Nest (BCom), CFP, owner/founder of York Region Money Coaches (2010), recently won the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce Award for 2014’s Professional Services Company of the Year and Personal Finance Blog of the Year for Canada. In October 2014 he founded Niagara Region Money Coaches. His wife Anita (Gruetzner) (BA & BEd’89) graduated with her MDiv in the spring of 2014, was ordained a minister in the Presbyterian Church, and is now the pastor at Stamford Presbyterian Church in Niagara Falls. Trevor and Anita have three children: Cymbria (3rd year, Laurier University, Business), Olivia (1st year, Queen’s Political Science) and Adam (Grade 10).
