1984

Janet Mann (MBA) was honoured in November 2010 with a commendation for “service benefiting the Office of the Queen’s representative in the Yukon.” The Territorial Commissioner holds an appointment comparable to that of provincial Lieutenant Governor. The current Yukon Commissioner, Geraldine VanBibber, presided over the ceremonial presentation to Janet. The Vice-Regal and Commissioners’ Commendations were established in 1998 and are processed by the Chancellery in Ottawa.

Janet Mann (MBA), Associate Deputy Minister for the Government of the Yukon, was honoured with the 2009 Premier’s Award of Excellence for leadership of the Mobile Radio System Project – a multi-year, multi-contractor negotiation to replace the territorial emergency responder communication system. The Premier’s Award of Excellence recognizes the significant accomplishments of Yukon government employees in providing outstanding service.

John Molloy (MBA), President and CEO of PARTEQ Innovations, was honoured by the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) with its AUTM Canada Award in recognition of his outstanding service to the technology transfer community. He is the President and CEO of PARTEQ Innovations, Queen’s technology transfer office that helps bring early-stage technologies to market.

Shauneen Bruder

Shauneen Bruder, MBA, was named chair of the board of governors of the University of Guelph. Shauneen, who is also executive vice-president of operations at the Royal Bank of Canada, is the first woman to hold the position. She says she’s excited to be back at Guelph after earning her BA at the school. Shauneen also serves as a director of CN and Andrew Peller Limited. She and her husband, Michael, Law’84, are the proud parents of three, and grandparents of three.

Janice Stairs, MBA, was appointed chair of the board of directors of Vancouver-based Trilogy Metals, an exploration company that’s developing the Ambler Mining District in northwestern Alaska. Janice has worked in the resource and legal sectors for 25 years and has been a Trilogy director for eight years.

Christopher Whyte (MBA) has joined Toronto-based Davis + Henderson Corporation as Vice President, Strategic Accounts, responsible for managing D+H’s key mortgage lender relationships. Previously, he worked at several of Canada’s largest retail banks, including TD Bank, Bank of Montreal, National Bank and, most recently, CIBC, where he was Vice President, Alternate Channels.

Kathleen E. Mackay (BCom), CA, is now the Executive Director of the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei that is responsible for facilitating trade ties between Canada and Taiwan. From 2008 to 2012, Kathleen was Director, Technical Barriers and Regulations, at Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada in Ottawa. Sheila Cooke-Witt (MBA) and husband Karsten Witt (MBA) completed a two-year circumnavigation of the world in their 55-foot X-Yacht GUNVØR XL. More than 60 family members and friends took part in their sailing adventure. John Thompson (Artsci’81, MBA’83) and Ellen Thompson (MBA’83) flew from Ghana, where John is with Nestlé, to South Africa, just for a visit during the ship’s stopover at Cape Town. Sheila and Karsten are now settling back into the ‘real world’ at their home in Hamburg, Germany, where Sheila is a teacher and translator and Karsten is President of Witt & Sohn AG, a multinational manufacturer of industrial fans.

Pat Andrews
Pat Andrews, BCom, after a 33-year career with Manulife, in Canada and Japan, has retired from his position as VP, Information Technology. He plans to spend time travelling, golfing, curling and pursuing his woodworking hobby. Having visited the edges of all seven continents over the past 15 years, mostly by cruise ship, he and his wife Leslie plan to fill in the middle sections of their travel map.

Ian R. Friendly, BCom, has joined Recombinetics Inc. as its CEO. This early-stage biotech company based in St. Paul, MN, develops and utilizes gene-editing technologies to improve and lengthen human lives, as well as to improve agriculture to help feed the world’s growing population and reduce animal suffering. Previously, Ian spent 31 years at General Mills, most recently as EVP/COO. He continues to serve on the Smith School of Business Advisory Board and Global Council.
