profile from 2017
After escaping war-torn Afghanistan in 1992, the Ghiacy family, including daughters Miriam, Humaira and Trina, relocated to Islamabad before eventually landing in Toronto in search of a better life. On the recommendation of a friend, the family subsequently settled in Kingston because of its smaller size and proximity to good schools. Although the move to Canada was difficult, the family persevered, each learning the new language while adapting to a completely different lifestyle. The Ghiacy sisters thrived, and Miriam, Humaira and Trina all eventually enrolled in Commerce, graduating in 2007, 2009 and 2013, respectively.
