Changes at the top in QSB Commerce and Executive Education
Both Shannon Goodspeed, (MBA’83, BSc’76) and Tom Anger, (MBA’82, BSc’78) — Executive Directors of the Commerce and QSB Executive Education programs respectively — are moving on from their current roles, but, fortunately for the school, staying within the QSB family. After their terms expire on July 1, following years of dedicated commitment to their managerial duties, both will continue to make their presence felt as members of the school’s faculty. Tom will be teaching Finance in the full-time MBA program and Shannon will continue to have an impact on Commerce students as a Communications and Business Ethics lecturer.
Shannon joined the school in 2004, originally as Associate Director then Director of the full-time MBA program after having taught at Calgary’s Mount Royal College (now University) and the Royal Military College in Kingston. She has led the Commerce program since 2007, during a period of significant change. During her tenure, the school welcomed a larger Commerce class, but never at the expense of quality. She was also instrumental in overseeing the development and implementation of a complete curriculum review.
“Thanks to her leadership, there is even more of what makes Commerce great,” says Dean David Saunders. “These enhancements include leadership opportunities and extracurriculars that stretch and excite our students.” Her commitment to students has been unflagging, from coaching and supervising competitors at case competitions to encouraging students to pursue their aspirations and helping them surmount academic and personal challenges.
Stepping into the Executive Director’s role is Lori Garnier, AMBA’08, (BCom, Memorial University), the current Commerce Director of Operations. Since joining QSB in 2002, Lori has gained extensive management experience as a Program Manager with QSB Executive Education and as Associate Director of the full-time MBA program.
Tom Anger has led QSB Executive Education since 2003, during a ten-year period that has seen great change and pressures such as a very unstable market due to the recent recession. Tom and his team grew the custom executive education business significantly, and both introduced new short-format and certificate programs and expanded their delivery to cities across Canada and overseas, specifically to the Middle East-North Africa (MENA) region. “By introducing many new innovations, Tom ensured we held our own in the new executive education market,” says David Saunders.
On July 1, Salman Mufti takes on the challenge of continuing to enhance the school’s position as one of Canada’s most respected executive education providers as Associate Dean and Executive Director of QSB Executive Education. A graduate of the Queen’s Executive MBA Class of ’97, Salman has a PhD from McGill University in Educational Psychology. He has extensive experience teaching in Queen’s MBA and Executive Education programs, along with management experience as a past Director of the full-time MBA and Executive MBA programs. Prior to joining QSB in 1997, Salman spent 12 years as a manager, entrepreneur and consultant in the private and public sectors.
