Bruce Grimes (MBA) died suddenly on Aug. 7 at age 53 in Victoria, BC. He will be remembered by his Queen’s classmates for his sense of humour and powerful laugh, ski trips to Lake Placid and Whistler among others, countless nights at the Grad Club, many late night debates over a Coors Light or two as he endeavored to solve the most pressing world problems of the day, his own brand of grumpy enthusiasm for life but, not least, for his unique and special way of making you feel good about yourself. Born in Ottawa and raised in Winnipeg, Bruce completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Manitoba (BCom’79). He loved to travel and participate in sports, especially hockey, skiing and rowing. It was at the Winnipeg Rowing Club that Bruce met his wife Deb in 1983. Bruce’s career successes included Great West Life and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

Henri van Eeghen (MBA) reports that his family company is developing well. Henri has been taking social responsibility more seriously the past few years by having people in the company involved in a number of developing countries, through a foundation the company created. This not only makes for a stronger cohesion within the company, it actually has brought new business with producers in these countries. Many of his customers are also now interested in participating in these projects by, for instance, arranging long term contracts with these producers. James Hughes, BCom, received the John B. Stirling Montreal Medal in May. It is the highest honour bestowed by the Montreal branch of the Queen’s University Alumni Association. Hughes received the award in part for his devotion to causes such as poverty reduction, homelessness and mental health. Hughes was working as a lawyer when he decided to switch careers to work in the non-profit sector, in 2002. He was director general of Old Brewery Mission, the largest organization serving homeless men and women in Quebec, from 2004 to 2008. “When I got there, the organization, established in 1889, was essentially managing homelessness by simply helping people get through the day. We turned it into a centre that focused on reducing homelessness permanently through long-term solutions,” he recently told the Queen’s Gazette. Today, he is a government relations executive with the non-profit McConnell Foundation.
