Barbara Dawn Fanning, MBA, died Sept. 5, 2017 in hospital in Oakville, ON, at age 62. She is survived by her mother Lois. She was predeceased by her brother Craig. Barbara excelled at learning, receiving her Bachelor of Science degree from McGill University and Master of Science degree from the University of Alberta, prior to attaining her Queen’s MBA.

Ellen Fry (EMBA) has been appointed the National Capital Commission Ombudsman in Ottawa. She is a mediator, arbitrator, and adjudicator with ADR Chambers Banking Ombuds Office.

Leanne Hill

Leanne Hill, BCom’99, has been working in the travel industry for the last 20 years. Recently, she accepted a position with Royal Caribbean International as the strategic account manager for Western and Central Canada. Leanne lives in North Vancouver, B.C. where she enjoys hiking and the outdoors. Most of all, she enjoys spending time with her two French Bulldogs, Lewis and Mr. Fitz.

Jennifer Hookey (BCom) and her family are relocating to Calgary after more than 13 years in Sydney, Australia. She is joining Ernst & Young as an Associate Partner in its Fraud Investigation & Dispute Services practice. Reports Jennifer, “It will be colder than what we are used to, but we are all very excited!”

Jamie Leong-Huxley, EMBA, let us know that she’s now the permanent vice-president, advancement at Alberta University of the Arts. She previously held the position for a year on an interim basis. Formerly the Alberta College of Art and Design, the nearly century-old school became a university in February 2019. Jamie loves the arts and also sits on the board of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

July 2008 Wedding of Margot Johnston and Darren Smart
Margot Johnston (BCom) married Darren Smart in Toronto last July. Among Margot’s Com’99 classmates at the wedding were Julie McGillis, Kim Vander Aerschot, Anne Brisbin, Cathy Kitchen, Karen MacDiarmid, Marcia McIntyre, Andrew Medd and Rick Malhotra. Margot and Darren met at Harvard Business School, where Margot completed her MBA in 2006. The Smarts now live in Toronto. Margot works for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.

Christine Keeling

Christine Keeling, EMBA, launched Long Haul Spa in 2018 in Brisbane, Australia after spending five years commuting between Canada and Australia as a technology executive. A year later, Long Haul Spa was listed with Singapore Airlines and won best beauty product in the DFNI Asia Pacific Awards for Travel Retail Excellence. It’s also shortlisted for the 2020 Travel Retail Awards and the 2020 Frontier Awards for Best New Beauty Brand. While COVID-19 has created challenges, Chris told us that she has used the time to re-evaluate and identify new products to bring to the market, including luxury PPE kits and home-use sizes of her travel skincare range. She adds that she looks forward to the day she can get on a flight back to Canada to see family and friends.
