Wayne Smithies, BCom’72, had several jobs after graduating from Commerce, including a brief stint as a commercial real estate agent, before discovering property management. He retired in June after 34 years as president of Martello Property Services. “Edi and I left Toronto to move to Vancouver in 1975 . . . We recently bought a home in the Phoenix area and plan to winter there starting this year. Too old to ski anymore!” he writes.

Donald Trenerry, BCom, died peacefully in January at Rosedale Hospice in Calgary, surrounded by family, in his 73rd year. He is survived by Colleen, his wife of 50 years; children Kathryn Trenerry-Harker (Stuart); Chris Trenerry (Jennifer); and extended family.

George William Watson, MBA, Sc’70, died on Nov. 30, 2018 at age 71 in Calgary. George’s career started at CIBC. He later worked at Dome Petroleum, Amoco Canada, Intensity Resources and TransCanada Pipelines. He went on to found a company with his oldest son, Eric. The company was merged into what is now Critical Control Energy Services Corp. George served as CEO until 2007 and chairman until 2018. He is survived by his wife, Sheila, Artsci’72, and children Eric, Tara and Scott.

Bill Johnston (BCom) married Monica Bennett in October and has moved from Hamilton, Ont. to Dundas, Ont. Retired from The Hamilton Spectator in 2011, Bill is on the board of the First Unitarian Church of Hamilton and is researching and writing the history of the 125-year-old church.

Paul Cherry (BCom) received the prestigious Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO) Award of Outstanding Merit, the highest honour that the Institute can bestow upon its members. The award recognizes conspicuous and sustained service to or on behalf of the profession, and was presented at a dinner in Toronto in September. In December, Paul was invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada at a ceremony officiated by Governor General David Johnston.

Paul Cherry
Paul Cherry (BCom) has been appointed an officer of the order of Canada in recognition of “his commitment to improving financial reporting, notably through his leadership in developing international accounting standards.” He continues in his role as Chairman of the International Financial reporting Standards Advisory Council and resides in St. John, N.B.

Joel Ellis, BCom, died in December 2016, at the Rideaucrest Home in Kingston, in the arms of his wife Marian, in his 78th year. He is survived by members of his extended family of brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Doug Jordan

Doug Jordan, MBA, let us know that he’s published his latest novel, The Treasure of Stella Bay. Set on Amherst Island in the 1960s, it tells the story of 12-year-old Alex Jorgenson, whose family has moved to the island and who must find his way in this new environment. Along the way, he makes new friends and has many adventures, including building a secret hideout and solving an old mystery. Doug says he drew on his inner Mark Twain and Stephen Leacock to write the book. afspublishing.ca
