Peter Rose (BCom) is now CFO for Arctic Construction Canada Ltd. Peter lives in Okotoks, Alta. His company does most of its work “north of 60” in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Duncan Shirreff (BCom) died Nov. 26, 2011 while watching sports in his beloved Picton, Ont. He is survived by his wife Jean, children Caitlin (Jared MacLeod), Ben and Erin, sister Angie (Doug Blaney), and twin brother Bruce (Caroline).

William Thomas, BCom’75, died Jan. 14 at age 69. Bill became a chartered accountant after graduation. In retirement, he loved being outdoors, travelling with his wife, Sheila, and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by Sheila Thomas, BCom’75; three children, including Janet Thomas, Ed’07; and eight grandchildren.

Susan Waywell, BCom, died on Oct. 6, 2020, at the age of 67. After graduation, Sue earned her designation as a chartered accountant. She set off for Canada’s North in 1979 and spent several years in Whitehorse and Yellowknife. She returned to Kingston in 1989 and joined Collins Blay & Co. (now MNP) as a partner. Sue is survived by her husband, Tom; son Steve; stepdaughters Nadine, Kristen, Marlene, Jessica, Tiffany and Marcjanna; two grandsons; nine step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Albert Riddell (BCom) of St. Thomas, ON, passed away June 9 in his 60th year. Born in Kingston, Al was retired as Canadian Timken’s first Canadian President. He enjoyed playing hockey and was active in the community, having served as President of the United Way, the St. Thomas Export Development Corporation, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and the Maple Leaf Foundation.

Royce Nettleton(BCom) is shown astride his horse Figaro, a Russian Warmblood. Both ride in the Cavalry Squadron of the Governor General’s Horse Guards and have been honoured to escort Royals and their Canadian representatives at the Queen’s Plate and the Royal Winter Fair. They are also weekly visitors at Royce’s local Tim Hortons drive-through in Oshawa, to pick up a coffee or hot chocolate. Royce is looking forward to seeing his classmates at their 40th anniversary at next fall’s Homecoming.

Robert Backstrom, BCom, died on Sept. 24, 2019. Bob married his best friend, Debbie, and together they raised three children: Rob (Van), Jennifer (Ian) Ozard and Ron. Bob was a devoted family man, known for his quick wit, dry sense of humour, dedication to work, fierce determination and kindness to others. Bob’s career spanned the manufacturing, healthcare and education fields.

Thomas Base, MBA, Artsci’71, died on July 7, 2019. He is survived by Gary Snow, his partner of 21 years; his sister Jennifer Mellalieu; brothers John (Casey) and Rick; and numerous nieces and nephews. Thomas was predeceased by his sister Lindy. After earning his MBA, Thomas embarked on a career as an automobile executive. He was a dedicated human rights activist and a member and long-term president of the Hidden Hammocks Estates Homeowners Association in Florida. Thomas loved dogs and cats and was an orchid aficionado.
