Thomas Base, MBA, Artsci’71, died on July 7, 2019. He is survived by Gary Snow, his partner of 21 years; his sister Jennifer Mellalieu; brothers John (Casey) and Rick; and numerous nieces and nephews. Thomas was predeceased by his sister Lindy. After earning his MBA, Thomas embarked on a career as an automobile executive. He was a dedicated human rights activist and a member and long-term president of the Hidden Hammocks Estates Homeowners Association in Florida. Thomas loved dogs and cats and was an orchid aficionado.

Jim Dinning (BCom, MPA’77) was installed as the 12th Chancellor of the University of Calgary on Nov. 12. The former Alberta cabinet minister is also Chairman of Western Financial Group and Export Development Canada.

Adrian Donoghue, BCom’74, died on Nov. 9, 2023. He was 74 years old. Adrian is survived by his wife of 46 years, Raymonde, two children and three grandchildren.

Henry Dortmans (BCom) has formed Henry Dortmans Associates, a consulting firm that focuses on business telecom, IT, and infrastructure management. In addition to giving advice and sharing his insights and influence through his company, Henry is still writing his monthly eColumn, “On the Line.” He has a book coming out soon that collects the best of these columns: More Tips, Traps and Tricks. Steve Gilchrist, BCom’74, writes, “Faced with barriers to travel and the general economic slowdown, I decided to go back to university to obtain a Masters of Environmental Science degree from the University of Toronto Scarborough. It was a daunting but fulfiling return to academe and a chance to buttress my knowledge of current environmental science.” Steve lives in Pickering, Ont., and has launched a business initiative, Cinergex Water, which markets air-to-water technologies in places that face water insecurity.

Steve Gilchrist (BCom) was recently named Chairman of Green Power Technologies (Canada) Inc., a manufacturer and operator of advanced, single-stream recycling facilities, and became theManagingDirector of IPW Geothermal Canada Inc. These positions will complement his ongoing role as President of Cinergex Solutions Ltd., a developer of waste-toenergy projects in developing countries.

Marshall Gummer
Marshall Gummer (BCom) is now owner and auctioneer at Marshall Gummer Estate Auctions in Castleton Ont., a quaint village just north of the Big Apple landmark on Hwy 401. The company specializes in art, jewelry, sterling silver and antique furniture (www.theappraiser.ca). Marshall has also renewed his passion for car-racing, and plans to drive the “Marshall Gummer Estate Auctions” vintage Porsche 914 in races at Mosport and Shannonville.

Gerald E. “Gerry” Hagerman (BCom), CA, died suddenly on May 21, aged 59. Born and raised in Virginiatown, ON, he excelled in sports of all kinds. After obtaining his CA in 1976, he embarked on a 36-year career with KPMG, working in their Kingston, Sydney, Bathurst, and North York offices. Left to mourn his passing are his wife Hollis, son Mark (Nelofer), grandsons Edward and Alexander, and 19 nieces and nephews. Gerry had strong Queen’s connections: his father, Dr. Gerald Hagerman (MD’45); siblings Joe (Carol), Barb (NSc’73; Dr. Bill Pine, BCom’73), Keitha (NSc’77; Lance Mitchell, BCom’77), Patty (NSc’80; Dr. John Rodgers) and his twin, Doug (BCom’74); as well as his sister-in-law, Corinne (Wood) Hagerman (Arts’72, MBA’75).
