What is the business problem that your product solves? Great Lakes Ginseng provides the opportunity for the consumer to know the exact origin of their product. It is important for people to be confident in the knowledge that their product is coming from a reliable source. We give the customer the comfort of knowing that their ginseng is coming directly from our farm. We keep our customers informed of what is happening throughout the year on our farm. With our years of growing experience, the consumer has the comfort level of knowing they are getting the best ginseng available.

The most important thing I’ve learned about starting a business: Patience and flexibility. When you start a business, you have to rely a lot on other people and their resources - other people that who may have their own agendas and businesses to run. It became clear to us early on that things were not going to play out exactly how we first planned. By being adaptable to each situation, we were able to build on our communication skills with our business partners. Through better communication, we were able to learn about our partners’ needs and they were able to understand ours, which helped build stronger working relationships.

Advice I’d give a budding entrepreneur: Be open to suggestion, and other’s opinions, but also be confident in your own decisions and ideas. You will get a lot of advice and ideas from others, which can be beneficial when building your business, but don’t let others speak for you. Ultimately it is your business and you get to make the decisions at the end of the day, which can be a very rewarding experience.
