Iain Bruce
Iain Bruce, BCom, after retiring in 2015 from his position as a Senior Managing Director of NYC-based Ambac Assurance Corp., is now operating Barrell Mill Advisors, LLC, an independent consultancy in credit-risk management and related fields. He has immersed himself in not-for-profit board work in and around his hometown of Westport, CT. He is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Westport Weston Family YMCA Foundation. As a member of the Board of Trustees of the Westport Library, he chairs the Building Committee responsible for the Library's $19.5M renovation. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Staples Tuition Grants, an organization providing needs-based university-tuition assistance to graduates of Westport's public high school. He continues to serve on the Smith School of Business Advisory Board and Global Council.

Derek Briffett, MBA, has joined the board of directors of SunOpta, a global company specializing in organic, non-genetically modified and specialty foods. Derek has had a long career in the consumer packaged goods and food industries, working at such companies as Associated Brands, International Foods Group, Conagra, Loblaw Companies, Kraft and Procter & Gamble.

Thomas Carney, BCom, died Oct. 15 in Toronto. He is survived by his siblings Jim (Cindy) of Vancouver; Paige Carney of Regina; Smith School of Business Advisory Board member Jeff Carney, BCom’84, (Carolyn), of Toronto; and several nieces and nephews. Tom began his career in the finance industry in Toronto then moved to Paris to improve his French at the Sorbonne and follow his dreams. He fell in Iove with Paris and its culture, made lifelong friends, became a financial translator and lived happily there for more than 15 years.

Gary Reynolds and daughters Lindsay, Jennifer, and Caroline
Gary Reynolds (MBA) is pleased to announce the addition of two of his daughters to the Queen’s Alumni Association this spring. Lindsay (pictured middle left) graduated with an Honours BA (Psychology and Biology) and begins working as an Assistant Brand Manager for Proctor and Gamble this summer. Jennifer (pictured left) graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce and will begin working toward her CA designation with KPMG in the fall. Youngest daughter Caroline (pictured middle right) has now completed her second year in Music at the University of Toronto. Gary expresses his sincere thanks to all the teaching and support staff at Queen’s for continuing to provide a great education and life experience. He resides in Calgary, Alta., where he is a consultant for the power and energy industries.

Bonnie Golomb, BCom, celebrated the 30th anniversary of both her company, Riverview Publishing Inc., and Profile Kingston magazine. Bonnie was honoured to have received the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce award for Business Person of the Year for 2015.

Mark Green, BCom, took a year off in 2018-2019 to travel with his wife, An Chi, in Asia and the Middle East. “Days featuring spontaneity and potential for adventure are the way to go from now on,” he writes, sharing that he is retiring from his position as a financial management adviser at Transport Canada in May.

Barbara Havrot, MBA’81, says that the YouTube channel she launched as a retirement project has amassed
18,000 subscribers and 2.5 million views. Barbara is a former high school math teacher. Her channel covers all the lessons in Grade 10 university mathematics, Grade 11 functions, Grade 12 advanced functions and Grade 12 calculus and vectors. Barbara currently resides in Ottawa.
