Leslie Herr (EMBA) is pleased to announce his April appointment as President and CEO, The Empire Life Insurance Company. Leslie joined Empire Life in November 1999 as Director of Sales, Central Ontario. In July 2001, he was appointed Vice-President, Individual Sales and Distribution, and over the next five years also held executive responsibility for Individual New Business Operations, Distribution and Strategy. Last January he was appointed Senior Vice-President, Individual Products.

Janet Jakobsen (EMBA) has been enjoying her first summer off after a milestone year in which she turned 50, remarried, made a major career shift and started “living out of an Ikea bag.” Her new role as a full-time Professor of Hospitality and Tourism with Niagara College entails living in Niagara-on-the-Lake during the week and returning home to Toronto on weekends (hence the need for the IKEA bag.) Fellow EMBA alums are invited to drop by and sample wines from Canada's only teaching winery.

Shahab Khan (MBA) was appointed Research Advisor in the Office of the CIO at Innovapost Inc. Previously, he spent four years creating business in the company’s consulting practise, and, prior to this, had been a key driver of Bell Canada’s Innovation Centre program. He is very engaged in the start-up community as an Entrepreneurship Advisor on Startup Canada’s National Advisory Council; as a mentor at Invest Ottawa and INcubes; and a Qvisor at QSB. He also sits on a number of advisory boards. Shahab is a married father of three, after the recent addition to the family of twins.

Shahab Khan (MBA) has joined Innovapost after working at Bell Canada in Ottawa for over six years in e-business development, managed services, IP Telephony and Solution Development through their Innovation Centre. Shahab and his wife Maheen, whom he married in 2007, have a 2½-year-old son, Amaar.

Michael Mahon (MBA) and his wife Laurie announce “with great pleasure” the arrival of Avery Cecile on Jan. 21, weighing 9 lbs., 7.8 oz., measuring 22 inches in length. “She’s a big’un” Michael reports, adding, “Two little hands, two little feet. Now the Mahon family is delightfully complete!”

Michael J. Mahon (MBA) and his wife Laurie have moved from Montreal to Kitchener, ON. Michael splits his time between Toronto and the Waterloo Region as Director, Strategic Investments and Initiatives at BDC Venture Capital, thereby earning a lot of Aeroplan points from his frequent travel.
