I came to the Full-time MBA at Smith School of Business because ...

Born and raised in Shanghai, China, with a bachelor's degree from the University of Victoria in Canada, I came to the Smith MBA to seek career development. Before joining the program, I worked in the cryptocurrency and primary research industries as my first and second jobs, which is relatively different from my career path in the consulting industry. I contacted a couple of MBA programs, including the Smith MBA program, early in October 2022 for the 2024 intake. Smith's MBA experience stands out because of its unique one-year program length, mixed pedagogy approach, and team-based environment. However, the primary key for me to join the Smith MBA program was its welcoming environment. Throughout the year 2023, during the application and the decision-making process, I talked to several Smith MBA staff and alumni, including connecting with the Career Advancement Centre. Everyone I spoke with came with a warm and welcoming attitude, which made me honestly believe the MBA year with Smith could become a transformational year in my life. Looking back now, I know I made a great choice, and what I have gained so far was a lot more than I had ever thought of before I joined the program. The exposure level is beyond my expectations. Smith MBA made me believe that the MBA program is a place to shape and create future leaders.

Tips for the upcoming applicants:

  1. Truly understand your "MBA why," not only for the application but also for yourself. During the MBA year, you will have many opportunities to push your limits and go in the direction you wish to go. Still, the exposure level for everything can quickly become overwhelming. 365 days are precious. Truly understanding why you want to do an MBA and remembering the reason in your heart will help you go through this year and make the right decision whenever possible.
  2. Be open to everything. The exposure level of the MBA program experience, including things you will learn from the lectures, alumni, and even your cohort, is a totally new experience. Your goals, views about this world, and how to approach the world could change during the MBA program. Be sure always to keep an open mind; it is the key to success.
