Julia Grein

Julia Grein ('19)

After my co-op/summer work experiences and speaking to working alumni from my undergraduate science program, I recognized that I lacked experience in the area of teamwork, which one needs to succeed in today’s business world. Although all graduate-level business programs promote group/teamwork, Smith is known for their team-based learning, providing a structure for learning how to work in an effective, diverse team. Its short format also gave me the boost I needed to improve my competitiveness as an applicant entering the job market.

The GDB gave me a new level of both personal and professional confidence because it was so immersive. It provided a safe space for me to come out of my shell and practice contributing in a team environment. When interviewing for my role at my current company, I remember feeling calm and confident; the Julia four months prior would not have felt that way! With the GDB’s focus on teaching students how to work in an effective team, I now not only have the ability to recognize how fortunate I am to be part of a great team, but I feel I can confidently contribute to the team’s overall success.

Come with an open mindset and willingness to learn to work with those in your assigned team. The GDB is fast-paced so you need to be dedicated to your studies, your team and your personal development. Although you are learning business, the GDB’s course content is not the sole focus. I can always Google what “EBITDA” means, but the time that went into practicing teamwork, relationship-building, networking and instilling confidence is what paid off for me, and certainly will continue to pay off in the future.
