Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the PhD program and when is the entrance date?
Doctoral programs are designed and approved such that requirements can be completed in 4-5 years of initial full-time registration in the program. The entrance month is September.

Is the program offered part-time or through distance learning?
Our PhD program requires our students study at Smith School of Business. Our classes are small and you are given the opportunity to collaborate with the faculty who will get to know you personally. Students can expect a vibrant research culture within the school.

Where can I get information on the status of my application?
When you apply online, you will receive a link the Application Status Manager, the status of your application can be found here.

Is there an application deadline?
Yes, completed applications are due on January 15, 2021.

Can I apply for a waiver from the English test component of the application?
Applicants whose native language is not English, but have studied in an English speaking academic institution for 12 months or more prior to applying, may submit with their application a TOEFL/IELTS exemption request.

Can I apply for an exemption from the GRE or GMAT test?
This is an important component of the completed application and all applicants are required to submit this test. This informs the Admissions Committee of your ability in analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal and reading skills. For information on how to send, please see our Admissions page.

What if I cannot obtain an official copy of my transcripts to upload to my online application?
You may take a copy of your transcripts to a Notary Public and have them notarized. If accepted into the program, we will require official transcripts and degree certificates sent to us in the University sealed envelope.

I have been in the workplace for several years and have lost contact with my previous academic instructors. Can I submit work references rather than academic references?
We strongly prefer the two references be academic. In some cases references from a professional or supervisor may be acceptable, however all efforts should be made to submit two academic references.

Where do I upload my two letters of reference?
Once you submit your references name and accurate email within the online application, our online system will automatically send the reference feedback form to them.

Do you offer funding?
Our doctoral students receive generous annual funding of $34,000 CDN.

Is it mandatory I have some research experience to apply?
It is not mandatory, however this will strengthen your application.

Is it mandatory I have a background in the area of specialization I am applying to?
It is required to have completed some academic courses or your degree in a discipline related to your area of specialization.
