How Jonathan Stanley, President and CEO AudioConexus Inc., captured return on his investment in Executive Education

Jonathan Stanley is the president and CEO of AudioConexus Inc., a global provider of GPS and handheld audio tours and multimedia interpretation to tourism companies. His company has been going through a period of rapid growth — 20 per cent a year over the last seven years. In 2015, top line revenue went up 86 per cent. Growth, Jonathan says, creates its challenges.

How do you align new product development requirements with organizational resources and technological solutions? What tools do you use? What cultural mindsets do you promote among the team? How does all this play into the big picture — the organization’s strategy for the next two or three years?

To find answers, Jonathan decided to enroll in Queen’s Executive Education Leadership program. Several months later, he also completed a Strategy program. Jonathan learned that, to navigate growth to achieve the new heights of success, he needed to open his mind to new ways of thinking about strategic decisions and performance management.

"One of the things I took away from the program was how to identify a clear and compelling value proposition. From a strategic standpoint, that means adopting the blue ocean strategy. We really embraced this strategy and did our homework in assessing where we can create value against our competitors."

Doing that homework is critical for an executive, Jonathan believes. It’s all about assessing where and how to create value to gain competitive edge. “Otherwise you risk heading straight into problems or, worse, failure,” he says. “The Smith School of Business prepares you for high performance in the arena that you’ve chosen to play the game.

Jonathan and his team spent two months building the strategic mission of the organization to guide it through the next three years. “This has been a critical part of the post-strategy process as we are embarking on a signi cant investment to develop a new product,” says Jonathan. “It really forced us to do our homework so we can launch a new product with a winning strategy. Some of the changes we made were difficult, but they helped us ensure that we are identifying and attracting the skills and expertise we require for our next stage of growth.
