Pharmacare – the implementation of publicly-funded prescription drug insurance – is a challenging issue to address in Canadian healthcare.  At the 2013 Queen’s Health Policy Change Conference, Toward a Canadian Healthcare Strategy, participants identified implementation of a national pharmacare program as the second most important priority in the development of a Canadian healthcare strategy. This backgrounder for the 2014 conference, Creating Strategic Change in Canadian Healthcare, describes recent calls for pharmacare in Canada, and presents a survey of existing provincial pharmacare programs.
