For many Commerce students, participation in extracurricular activities is an important part of their university experience. Extracurricular activities can be a great way for students to explore their interests, meet new people, and apply the skills they learn in the classroom.
There are many opportunities for extracurricular involvement through the Commerce Society. Although there are many student positions available, there is typically an application and interview process. Your student may not always be successful, and may sometimes be disappointed. Remind them that this is something that everyone experiences, and that there are lots of opportunities available.
If your student is looking for more extracurricular involvement, encourage them to look at opportunities through the wider Queen’s and Kingston communities. Sometimes, students forget about passions they had in high school – getting involved in music, dance, or intramural sports can be a low-key way to rekindle those passions, and can be a great outlet to help manage stress. Involvement in a wide range of activities can also help your student meet new people and increase their social network.
For students who are highly involved, remind them that academics come first. We encourage students not to overcommit, and to seek help from Student Academic Success Services or an Academic Advisor if they are feeling overwhelmed.
