Group buying power 2012

Derek Szeto, BCom'05
profile from 2012

While attending high school in Oakville, Ont., Derek Szeto discovered that he could save money while shopping online and sharing the deals with others. Though it originally started as a fun side project, Derek ran RedFlagDeals.com throughout his undergraduate degree and decided to pursue it full time after finishing school.

Talking to Smith Magazine in 2012, Derek recalled the help he received from Commerce professors Dan Thornton and Ken Wong, both in and out of the classroom. Once he started pursuing the business full time, the site experienced huge growth, thanks to being one of the only online shopping sites targeted at Canadians. After several years, the company was acquired by YellowPages, which allowed for further expansion and success.
