On November 28, 2009, Gaels' quarterback and Commerce student Danny Branagan led the team to a nail-biting win over the University of Calgary Dinos to capture the national university football championship. Thinking that was the end of his football career, Danny had accepted a job with PwC, which he was preparing for when he was invited to try out for the CFL.

At the time, Danny was the only Canadian quarterback in the CFL.
