EDII Task Force Working Groups

To both expand Smith community engagement and accelerate progress, working groups have been formed to carry out specific activities and focus on key issues bringing action items, findings and recommendations forward to the Task Force.

Physical, Virtual & Safe Spaces

Examine public spaces (Goodes Hall, website) through an EDII lens, consider need for and structure of a safe and welcoming space for diverse students (virtual, student portals) and for physical & accessible gathering spaces and what that might look like. Develop approaches for students, faculty and staff to have safe spaces for open dialogue.

Focus on principles of EDII and weaving them into the fabric of the curriculum and associated activities & materials. Increase awareness of our values, our commitment to them and expectations of behaviour — how best can this be achieved? (e.g. statements on course outlines, activities/events). Strategies to help faculty adopt EDII in their teaching, development of a toolkit.

Policy, Process and Practice Reform

Examine policies, processes and practices at Queen's and Smith related to students, faculty and staff, notably those involving personnel matters such as reporting discrimination and harassment. Identify current state and best practices. Communicate ways to report incidents — from seeking advice and guidance, to formal reporting. Identify and remove barriers in hiring and adjudication processes. Collaborate as appropriate with Smith program leaders to identify and remove biases and barriers to access in student recruitment.
