New ISF grant to fund research into financing sustainable agriculture

February 1, 2023

The McCall MacBain 2022 CSFN Grant has been awarded to the team led by Dr. Phoebe Stephens of Dalhousie University and Dr. Sean Geobey at the University of Waterloo

Thanks to the generosity of the McCall MacBain Foundation, the Institute for Sustainable Finance (ISF) has been able to offer additional funding for a research project by members of the Canadian Sustainable Finance Network (CSFN).

The McCall MacBain 2022 CSFN Grant has been awarded to the team led by Dr. Phoebe Stephens of Dalhousie University and Dr. Sean Geobey at the University of Waterloo for their research into how best to invest in reducing the negative environmental and social impacts associated with agriculture in Canada, including high levels of GHG emissions. Work on the project, Financing Versus Funding for Sustainable Agriculture, will be done over the coming year.

“How to finance sustainability in agriculture is a priority topic on the minds of finance industry leaders, and research is required,” says ISF Executive Director Sara Alvarado. “That is why we are so pleased to be able to secure funding for this, the second major CSFN project on sustainable agriculture. Thank you to our supporters at the McCall MacBain Foundation, and good luck to the grant recipients on this important and ambitious project.”

The CSFN, is an independent, formal research and educational network, now with more than 100 members across Canada and US. CSFN has been instrumental in sharing learnings and opening the door to future research topics, as well as creating key partnerships across Canada and globally.

Dr. Phoebe Stephens is an Assistant Professor, Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture, Business & Social Sciences, at Dalhousie University, and Dr. Sean Geobey (co-investigator) is an Assistant Professor in Social Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship at the University of Waterloo's School of Environment, Enterprise and Development (SEED).
